Hotel banquet waste supports charities
Waldorf Astoria Hotels & Resorts' Rome Cavalieri hotel is donating food-waste from its banquets to charity.

The property has already donated 3,400 meals in the course of a trial month. It now hopes to give away 35,000 over the course of a year.

The project is being managed in collaboration with Italian non-profit association Equoevent, which hygienically recovers leftover food from events and redistributes it to charities.

The scheme helps underprivileged communities and also saves tonnes of bio-waste.

Rome Cavalieri managing director, Alessandro Cabella, said: "I was worried about seeing all that excellent food thrown away at the end of the banquets, because of its waste and its high environmental impact... 20-30 per cent of food produced for events goes to waste."

The hotel hopes to inspire others to follow suit.
